A coordinated response to Europe’s urban pollution challenge.

01 — The project

To reduce pollution in cities with tangible solutions, PUREPOLIS aims to transform urban health by pioneering advanced tools that empower policymakers to take high-impact action. PUREPOLIS encourages decision-making grounded in data, citizen participation, and scientific evidence.

The project will deliver three core tools: a Citizen Science App for community engagement and real-time monitoring, a pollution source tracking tool, and a health impact assessment framework coupling toxicology and epidemiology. Together, they will link exposure to 35 pollutants across air, noise, water, and soil to 10 critical health risks, including overall wellbeing.

PUREPOLIS will further analyse the efficiency of Zero Pollution Measures in terms of health, economic, and climate impacts. These insights will be translated into a Toolbox helping policymakers to develop comprehensive strategies to tackle urban pollution.

A Vulnerability and Behavioural Framework will support the creation of equitable and sustainable solutions that are replicable, scalable, and will lead to real-world impact across Europe. Tailored strategies will be tested on case studies in Nantes, France and Valencia, Spain across multiple policy sectors.

Five priorities — one Health-for-All-Policies design.

02 — OBJECTIVES

PUREPOLIS aims to reduce urban pollution and its associated health impacts more effectively, focusing on co-developing innovative methods and tools that enable policymakers to prioritise actions. Using a Health-for-All-Policies design approach, it will be possible to deploy and adopt the developed methods across regional scales and diverse local authorities.

OBJECTIVE 01

Provide methods and tools for local authorities and policymakers.

OBJECTIVE 02

Tailor Zero Pollution Measures through strengthened stakeholder engagement.

OBJECTIVE 03

Target priority pollutants in the city areas.

OBJECTIVE 04

Improve impact, cost-effectiveness, and acceptability of Zero Pollution Measures.

OBJECTIVE 05

Target priority pollutants in the city areas.
